Some applications just sit there and do nothing...until a 'trigger' occurs. This trigger could be one or several of many events: A document uploaded to a directory, a row in a database entered, the click of a clock to the top of the hour. With access to these triggers, Huziwutzis can take action once these triggers are recognized. THe simplest triggered alert is an e-mail, but we can also do a new DM, a text, or even paper mail.
Monitoring works in the same fashion. Once a change in an environment is made, we can add a row to a database table where the trends can be graphed over time.
